Today’s Google Doodle honoree may be one of the coolest to date. An homage to the legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku on his 125th birthday, the logo depicts the Hawaiian native on a surfboard with illustrations inspired by his home state.

Born on August 24, 1890 in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii, Kahanamoku not only introduced the world to surfing, but won five Olympic medals for swimming.

“He brought surfing to the world, and by force of his magnetism and singularly Hawaiian spirit helped The Islands achieve statehood.”

During his lifetime, Kahanamoku appeared in several films, was elected sheriff of Honolulu, Hawaii for 13 consecutive terms between 1932 and 1961, and was the first person to be inducted into both the Swimming Hall of Fame and the Surfing Hall of Fame.

Created by Google Doodler Matt Cruickshank, the Doodle includes Duke’s iconic 16-foot wooden surfboard.
